Diamond Ortiz – Loveline (2016)

Today is the big day for all the funkateers out there – MOFUNK RECORDS releases the highly-anticiapated album by Diamond Ortiz, called “Loveline” in both in Vinyl and CD formats.

Representing the Bay Area branch of MoFunk’s ever-growing tree, Diamond Ortiz finally brings this first full-length with the label. Fueled by the success of the Zooted 7″ single and subsequent Boomerang 12″ EP,  Diamond continues to expand on his heavy-bottomed, pulsating brand of funk, underscored by deep synth bass lines and skull-shattering hand claps, contrasted perfectly with beautiful melody and joyful sentiments, as exemplified by song titles such as “She Chose Me,” “We Clicked,” and “Natural Fun.”

Weaving interchangeably between the human and electronic incarnations of his voice, it’s easy to draw comparisons between his talkbox technique and those of his more iconic predecessors. Yet, while he makes reference with reverence, he does it in his own way, having distilled the blueprints of many into the sound of one – and it’s ready to be heard in full on “Loveline”.

Make sure to listen & buy your copy @ MOFUNK OFFICIAL BANDCAMP – this is one of those releases that’s not to be missed.

Bybo – Dream On (2016)

0007876932_10Early September, Germany-based label dropped their 3rd release – Dream On EP by a Karlsruhe native, Bybo – a producer from Germany. First Touch lent a hand here with some mixing/post production and put their glossy stamp on most of the cuts.

This 6 track EP travels with ease through the spectrums of Modern Funk, Boogie, New Jack Swing & G-Funk and is definitely must have for the fans of all the above genres: “you get a mixture of fat synth bass, jazzy chords and mellow strings. The end result is a mix that ranges between 80s Funk and Gfunk. Besides this you can recognize elements of New Jack Swing, clearly in the track “Superintelligence” with features such as specific chords mixed with 80s synth sounds”.

“As co-founders of the label MoFunk Records, and the production team behind one of modern funk’s signature anthems, “Press Play” (featuring Zackey Force Funk), XL Middleton + Eddy Funkster’s album is truly an opus long overdue. In sound, it draws heavily from LA’s musical well over the last several generations, bringing forth hard electro funk styles on “Show Some Respect,” bouncy lowrider funk on cuts like “Solicitation,” and giving a progressive nod to 90’s g-funk on the LBC’d out “California Fly,” which features Domino of “Getto Jam” fame (even if you’re too young or coastally bipartisan to remember the song, heads will recall Biggie’s line “here we go, here we go, but I’m not Domino”). Furthermore, XL + EF channel the more modern feel of ambient, pad-heavy funk on songs like “On Our Way To Funkmosphere.” In spirit, it’s more of a P-Funkesque party, as the entire MoFunk roster plus extended family join in variously on all of the album’s 7 songs, contributing everything from vocals to guitar and talkbox. This is kind of party you’ll want to join in – an ongoing celebration known as modern funk.”

This is a great album overall & it features Moniquea, Diamond Ortiz, Lady Deuce & Megan Doherty of Social Lovers, Brian Ellis and, of course, Zackey Force Funk and the legendary OG Domino who were mentioned above.

Described as “an audiovisual production and performance duo” from Mexico, Shiro Schwarz is truly a complete multimedia experience. The bright, 64-bit aesthetics of their visual style are a perfect compliment to their synth-heavy tunes, which blend elements of boogie funk, synth-pop, and new wave, while wrapping it all in an air of digital mystery, which lends deeply to the allure of their sound.

Ya’ll may cop this record at MoFunk Bandcamp, they have already started shipping them all over the world.

This album is J. Marie’s tribute to the 80’s and 90’s music she grew up on with the first song “Boy Toy” bringing back memories of Vanity’s “Nasty Girl.” Maybe some of you remember she was featured with that song on Wadz “So Smooth (The Funk Album)” back in 2010.
