XL Middleton – 2 Minutes Till Midnight (2019)

After making serious noise in the modern funk world, XL Middleton makes a return to the g-funk/hip hop sound that marked his earlier work with “2 Minutes Till Midnight“. It’s a funked out, synth-heavy excursion with an equal amount of appeal for modern funksters or the underground legions of g-funk fans that put XL on the map originally. Those familiar with his most recent albums, “Tap Water” and “Things Are Happening,” will recognize the signature synth leads and intricate analog bass lines. Those unfamiliar with Middleton as an MC will find that he challenges standards in the worlds of both underground and mainstream rap, eschewing the backpack as much as the Bentley, falling into a space that few can. XL’s lyricism is cerebral and well-read, yet it’s clear that he comes from a part of the world that relishes khakis, Chuck Taylors & Zapp records.

“2 Minutes Till Midnight” stands firmly rooted in the funk tradition of Los Angeles, showing reverence for the music that inspired it by bringing g-funk legends Kokane & Domino (“Getto Jam”) into the fold as guest artists and by featuring album artwork from Joe Cool, who designed the iconic “Doggystyle” album cover for Snoop Dogg. XL’s contemporaries, such as labelmates Zackey Force Funk, Moniquea, & I, Ced, also join in and help to remind us that the album is not just a self-indulgent tribute to a bygone era of music. As modern funk grew largely out of hip hop, XL takes that growth backward, and moves the music forward as a result.

We has a unique chance to listen to the whole album in advance and we have to admit that it’s the amazingly dope g-funk album with a modern funk feel to it. It is available in Vinyl, CD, Cassette & Digital formats @ MOFUNK  RECORDS BANDCAMP

El Don & Mista L – Visions From The G-Funk Book (2018)

We, G-Funk.WS, are proud to present our new album which we worked upon from start to finish: El Don & Mista L – “Visions From The G-Funk Book”.

El Don (Italy) & Mista L (Russia) started working together back in 2014 when J.Locc found Mista L’s talent in songwriting and suggested to make a track with 100% English lyrics on it. That’s how “Funkin Til The Cops Come Knoccin” was born. Realizing that g-funk in Italian language doesn’t sell well, the idea to do a completely English project grew up. G-Funk.WS team started from scratch by building this album together and it took 4 long years. Mista L wrote all lyrics for El Don as well as for himself, managing its way in all good g-funk traditions. Of course, without a help from the best producers in the movement it wouldn’t be possible. Productions from Wadz (France), XL Middleton (USA), Sovan (France), Docc Free (Italy), RTN (Poland), Erenes (Poland) and others made this album what it is now. Not to mention all the guests who put in their incredible work too: OG Domino, OG Daddy V, Foesum, Scrooge, XL Middleton, Collarossi, Slip Capone (R.I.P), 530DC, KOG, Lil’J, 92, Too Deep, Erenes, DJ War, Kalai & Linda.

We released this album digitally & in CD format (real press, not bullshit CD-R’s) on our OFFICIAL BANDCAMP. This is Limited release of 300 copies worldwide, so first come, first served!

Moniquea ‎– Blackwavefunk (June 2nd, 2017)

Moniquea has already established herself as one of the foremost female artists in the modern funk scene with her 2014 MoFunk Records debut album “Yes No Maybe”. With her follow-up, she continues exploring and expanding upon the boogie/modern soul sound of her debut, and at the same time, ventures bravely into a new sound inspired by the new wave and synth-pop sounds of the 80’s. Thus, the album title: Blackwavefunk. Executively produced by XL Middleton & Eddy Funkster, the album was mainly produced by the one and only XL Middleton with a little exception of one track “Knew It” which was produced by Turquoise Summers while other two tracks “Why Can’t You See” and “Check Your Sources” were co-produced Eddy Funkster and Moniquea respectively. By all means, this is a great modern funk album which is gonna turn classic after some time.

Today is the official release date so you may not hesitate & cop both Vinyl and/or CD @ MoFunk Bandcamp though we recommend to get both vinyl & CD versions as CD has the bonus track “Already Done That” which was B-Side track on “Checkin’ Out/Already Done That” Lathe Cut 7″.

Diamond Ortiz – Loveline (2016)

Today is the big day for all the funkateers out there – MOFUNK RECORDS releases the highly-anticiapated album by Diamond Ortiz, called “Loveline” in both in Vinyl and CD formats.

Representing the Bay Area branch of MoFunk’s ever-growing tree, Diamond Ortiz finally brings this first full-length with the label. Fueled by the success of the Zooted 7″ single and subsequent Boomerang 12″ EP,  Diamond continues to expand on his heavy-bottomed, pulsating brand of funk, underscored by deep synth bass lines and skull-shattering hand claps, contrasted perfectly with beautiful melody and joyful sentiments, as exemplified by song titles such as “She Chose Me,” “We Clicked,” and “Natural Fun.”

Weaving interchangeably between the human and electronic incarnations of his voice, it’s easy to draw comparisons between his talkbox technique and those of his more iconic predecessors. Yet, while he makes reference with reverence, he does it in his own way, having distilled the blueprints of many into the sound of one – and it’s ready to be heard in full on “Loveline”.

Make sure to listen & buy your copy @ MOFUNK OFFICIAL BANDCAMP – this is one of those releases that’s not to be missed.

“As co-founders of the label MoFunk Records, and the production team behind one of modern funk’s signature anthems, “Press Play” (featuring Zackey Force Funk), XL Middleton + Eddy Funkster’s album is truly an opus long overdue. In sound, it draws heavily from LA’s musical well over the last several generations, bringing forth hard electro funk styles on “Show Some Respect,” bouncy lowrider funk on cuts like “Solicitation,” and giving a progressive nod to 90’s g-funk on the LBC’d out “California Fly,” which features Domino of “Getto Jam” fame (even if you’re too young or coastally bipartisan to remember the song, heads will recall Biggie’s line “here we go, here we go, but I’m not Domino”). Furthermore, XL + EF channel the more modern feel of ambient, pad-heavy funk on songs like “On Our Way To Funkmosphere.” In spirit, it’s more of a P-Funkesque party, as the entire MoFunk roster plus extended family join in variously on all of the album’s 7 songs, contributing everything from vocals to guitar and talkbox. This is kind of party you’ll want to join in – an ongoing celebration known as modern funk.”

This is a great album overall & it features Moniquea, Diamond Ortiz, Lady Deuce & Megan Doherty of Social Lovers, Brian Ellis and, of course, Zackey Force Funk and the legendary OG Domino who were mentioned above.
